Continuing in our series on “How To Choose A Family Law Lawyer,”
I want to get to what carries great importance in today’s economy: PRICE.
Getting a divorce can be very expensive, for many reasons. First, Indiana
is a “no-fault” divorce state, and if you have been married
for a significant period of time, it doesn’t matter who is right
or wrong or who wants to get divorced and who doesn’t — the
presumptive split of your assets is 50/50. Meaning that you stand to lose
50% (or more) of what you have spent (quite possibly) your lifetime earning.
Not to mention if you have children the amount of support you will be ordered
to pay is not set in stone. Contrary to popular belief, the child support
amount is a part of a negotiation, and the
Indiana Child Support Calculator is a guide to provide a starting point or a frame of reference. But yes,
of course the children are worth it — but everyone knows child rearing
can be very expensive.
With so much to lose – now is not the time to skimp on your lawyer.
If you had an expensive piece of jewelry that you wanted to protect and
safeguard, would you pay the neighbor boy $1.00 per week to keep it in
his top dresser drawer, or would you pay the local bank $50 per month
to keep it in the safe under lock and key?
That is not to say the neighbor boy’s intentions are bad –
they probably aren’t. Nor does it mean that your jewelry won’t
be safe with him — it might. The question is, is it worth the extra
investment to select a caretaker with
knowledge and experience to give you the peace of mind knowing you are doing all you can to protect
yourself and your assets.
With that being said, also be careful about going to the OTHER end of the
spectrum. Don’t let your emotional state convince you that you have
to retain the most expensive lawyer in town from MEGA LAW FIRM. Sure the
marble floors and mahogany bookcases are plush —
but someone has to pay for that – and that someone is YOU!
When choosing a lawyer, make price a part of your decision-making process.
Shop around and get prices. Play it safe and find an experienced lawyer
that will spend some time on the phone with you answering your questions,
with reasonable prices and whom you feel comfortable with. Remember, you
don’t have to pay premium prices to get a great lawyer.
